How Federal Income Tax Works
The United States uses a progressive tax system, meaning your income is taxed in layers called brackets. Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate โ not your entire income.

Effective vs. Marginal Tax Rate
Your marginal tax rate is the rate on your last dollar of income. Your effective tax rate is the actual percentage of your total income that goes to federal tax. For most people, the effective rate is significantly lower than the marginal rate.
